In an unprecedented move, the Washington National Cathedral hosted the Islamic call to prayer, known as the Azan, during an interfaith prayer ceremony on January 21, 2025. The event, which was attended by newly inaugurated U.S. President Donald Trump, marked a significant milestone in the Cathedral’s commitment to fostering interfaith harmony and dialogue.

The interfaith Service of Prayer for the Nation brought together leaders from diverse religious traditions, including Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, to pray for the nation and its leadership. The inclusion of the Azan stood out as a historic first, symbolizing a step towards greater inclusivity in national religious observances.

Speaking at the event, a representative of the Muslim community expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the ceremony. “The Azan is a call for peace and devotion. Its inclusion here today is a testament to America’s commitment to religious pluralism and unity,” he stated.

President Donald Trump, who was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on January 20, 2025, was present at the service alongside other dignitaries, clergy, and community leaders. The ceremony featured prayers, hymns, and reflections from various faiths, emphasizing the theme of unity in diversity.

The Dean of the Washington National Cathedral, Rev. Randolph Marshall Hollerith, noted the significance of the event in his remarks. “This is a moment to remind ourselves that our strength as a nation lies in our ability to embrace our differences while standing together as one people.”

The inclusion of the Azan in a traditionally Christian space was met with widespread praise, with many viewing it as a reflection of the evolving religious landscape in the United States. The service, broadcast live to a national audience, was hailed as a symbol of hope and unity in a divided world.

As the call to prayer resonated within the iconic walls of the Cathedral, it served as a poignant reminder of the nation’s founding principles of religious freedom and mutual respect. The event underscored the importance of interfaith dialogue in addressing shared challenges and building a more inclusive society.
