Alaafin Orders Ooni of Ife to Revoke “Okanlomo of Yorubaland” Title Within 48 Hours

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

Ibadan — A fresh rift has emerged within the Yoruba traditional hierarchy as the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, demanding the revocation of the chieftaincy title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland recently conferred on Ibadan-based businessman, Chief Dotun Sanusi.

In a strongly worded statement on Monday, the Alaafin declared that the conferment of a pan-Yoruba title such as Okanlomo of Yorubaland falls exclusively under the authority of the Alaafin’s stool, describing the Ooni’s action as an “encroachment” on his traditional powers.

“No monarch has the authority to confer a chieftaincy title in the name of the entire Yorubaland except the Alaafin of Oyo. The so-called title given to Chief Dotun Sanusi is invalid and must be withdrawn within 48 hours,” Oba Owoade warned.

The development has triggered reactions across the South-West, with cultural historians noting the delicate balance of influence between the Alaafin of Oyo, historically regarded as the political head of the Yoruba empire, and the Ooni of Ife, revered as the spiritual custodian of the Yoruba race.

Observers fear the clash could escalate tensions among traditional institutions if not carefully managed. Meanwhile, aides to the Ooni of Ife have yet to issue an official response as of press time.

The Merit Newspaper reports that Chief Dotun Sanusi, popularly known as “Ilaji,” is a philanthropist and industrialist from Ibadan, Oyo State, widely recognized for his contributions to community development and sports promotion. His recent recognition by the Ooni was celebrated among his supporters but has now become the subject of controversy.

Political analysts suggest that the row underscores the long-standing contest over Yoruba traditional supremacy, which has occasionally surfaced in disputes between leading monarchs.

As the 48-hour deadline approaches, all eyes remain on the palace in Ile-Ife for the Ooni’s next move.
