Spain were crowned champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 following extra time in a pulsating final at the New York New Jersey Stadium, East Rutherford, on Sunday.

The fiercely contested showdown between two of world football’s greatest nations remained deadlocked for 90 minutes before Spain finally found the breakthrough in the 106th minute of extra time. Ferran Torres emerged as the hero, calmly finishing from close range after Nico Williams’ headed pass from a Pedro Porro cross split the resilient Argentine defence.

Spain dominated large periods of the final, creating the better chances and controlling possession, but Emiliano Martínez produced a string of outstanding saves to keep Argentina in the contest. The Albiceleste, however, struggled to threaten Spain’s goal throughout the encounter, with Luis de la Fuente’s disciplined side denying Lionel Messi and his teammates any meaningful attacking rhythm.

Argentina’s task became even more difficult after midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off late in regulation time following a second yellow card, forcing the defending champions to play the remainder of the final with 10 men. Spain eventually capitalised on their numerical advantage to end Argentina’s hopes of retaining the trophy.

The victory secured Spain’s second FIFA World Cup crown, adding to the historic title they won in South Africa in 2010. It also completed a remarkable era for Spanish football, with the European champions once again proving themselves the world’s best on the grandest stage.

For 19-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal and his teammates, the triumph marked the culmination of an outstanding tournament in which Spain displayed attacking flair, tactical discipline and remarkable consistency. The young star’s rise to global prominence symbolised the beginning of a new generation for La Roja.

For Argentina, the defeat brought an emotional end to their title defence after another memorable World Cup campaign. Led by veteran captain Lionel Messi, the South Americans had hoped to become the first nation in more than six decades to successfully defend the World Cup, but Spain’s resilience ultimately denied them a place in history.

The Merit Newspaper acknowledges that the 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, concluded as the largest edition in the tournament’s history with 48 participating nations. The final delivered another unforgettable chapter in football history, as Spain dethroned the reigning champions to lift the famous golden trophy and once again stand at the summit of world football.
