The race to succeed Seyi Makinde has steadily evolved from open declarations of ambition to a more calculated, behind-the-scenes contest, as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State moves closer to unveiling its preferred gubernatorial candidate.

Since late March, the PDP’s screening committee—constituted by the governor—has quietly concluded its exercise, clearing a formidable lineup of aspirants. Among those in contention are Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo; Samuel Adejumobi; Commissioner for Education, Nureni Adeniran; Chief of Staff, Segun Ogunwuyi; Speaker of the House, Adebo Ogundoyin; federal lawmaker Adedeji Stanley Olajide; and Hon. Saheed Fijabi, among others. Each brings a unique mix of grassroots appeal, administrative exposure, and political leverage.

Yet, as the field narrows, the defining question is no longer who can run—but who will be chosen.

The timing of this political calculation is delicate. On Wednesday, April 22, 2026, the Supreme Court of Nigeria reserved judgment on the lingering PDP leadership dispute arising from the controversial 2025 Ibadan convention. While the court’s decision to withhold immediate judgment introduces a layer of uncertainty, it has done little to stall political momentum within the state.

Governor Makinde, however, appears unperturbed. He is said to be confident that the apex court will ultimately rule in favour of the masses and in defence of Nigeria’s democratic stability—a position that reinforces his resolve to push ahead with the party’s internal processes.

Indeed, indications suggest that the governor and key stakeholders are proceeding with a consensus-building arrangement scheduled to commence on Thursday, April 23. The message from the top is clear: a consensus candidate will emerge. By the first week of May, the PDP—and by extension, Oyo State—may have a clear picture of its standard-bearer for 2027.

This brings the conversation back to the central puzzle: who among the cleared contenders fits the mould of Makinde’s anointed successor?

Will it be a loyal technocrat from within the administration, a grassroots mobiliser with deep political structures, or a bridge-builder capable of uniting the party’s diverse interests?

As consultations intensify and alignments shift, the answer may lie not just in popularity or pedigree, but in strategic acceptability—the one factor that often determines consensus in Nigerian party politics.

In the days ahead, the permutations will thin, the signals will grow clearer, and the quiet calculations within the PDP will ultimately produce one name—Makinde’s preferred heir to Agodi Government House.
