The Merit Newspaper Editorial

In modern democratic practice, political communication has extended far beyond rallies, manifestos, and press statements. A political party’s digital platforms—especially its official website—now function as its most immediate public face, shaping perception in real time and projecting institutional identity to both supporters and observers.

It is against this backdrop that The Merit Newspaper finds it necessary to draw attention to a curious and politically significant issue: the reported continued display of the portrait of former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on the official website of the Labour Party, despite widespread reports that he has exited the party and that the party has since repositioned itself ahead of the 2027 general election with a new presidential candidate, Dr. Chibuzo Okereke.

If this report is accurate, it reflects more than a mere technical oversight. It points to a deeper issue of institutional inconsistency and digital communication lapse that no serious political organisation should ignore.

Political parties are expected to define themselves clearly at every point in time. Their leadership structure, electoral direction, and public-facing symbols must reflect their current reality—not their past affiliations. The continued display of a former flagbearer, especially one as politically significant as Peter Obi, raises legitimate questions about the Labour Party’s internal coordination and message discipline.

This situation is particularly sensitive given the central role Obi played in elevating the party’s national profile during the 2023 general elections. His candidacy energized a broad base of young voters and contributed significantly to the emergence of what became popularly known as the “Obidient” movement. That historical reality cannot be denied. However, political capital derived from past alliances must not be confused with current political structure.

If the Labour Party is indeed charting a new course for 2027, then its official communication channels must reflect that transition clearly and decisively. Anything short of that risks creating confusion among supporters, weakening public trust, and exposing the party to avoidable speculation about its internal cohesion.

However, if the continued presence of the image is the result of administrative delay or technical negligence, then it signals an equally troubling concern: weak institutional control over its digital assets. In today’s political environment, where perception is shaped in seconds and consumed in real time, such lapses are no longer trivial. They are politically costly.

The role of a political party’s website is not ceremonial. It is authoritative. It tells citizens who the party is, who represents it, and what it stands for. Any contradiction between its displayed content and its actual political structure creates a credibility gap that can be exploited by opponents and misunderstood by the electorate.

The Merit Newspaper therefore urges the Labour Party to urgently review its digital communication architecture and ensure full alignment between its leadership reality and its official online representation. Political parties must recognise that in the digital age, symbolism is not passive—it is declarative.

Nigeria’s democracy is still evolving, and political institutions must evolve with it. Parties that fail to maintain internal coherence in both structure and communication risk weakening not only their own credibility but also public confidence in the political system at large.

Until such inconsistencies are addressed, the lingering image of Peter Obi on the Labour Party’s official platform—if indeed still present—will continue to raise questions that go beyond aesthetics. It becomes a symbol of unresolved transition in a party that must now define its future with clarity, not ambiguity.
