New York, USA -November 4, 2026
Democrats have won control of both chambers of the United States Congress in the November 3 midterm elections, delivering a major political setback to President Donald Trump and his Republican Party.

The Associated Press and other major news organisations reported on Wednesday that Democrats had secured victories sufficient to take control of the Senate and the House of Representatives, marking a significant shift in the balance of power in Washington.

The results represent a major challenge to Trump’s administration, as voters expressed concerns over the cost of living, inflation, the government’s direction and the US war with Iran. Reuters reported that dissatisfaction with the economy and the president’s leadership contributed to the Democratic gains.

Democrats made significant advances in traditionally Republican strongholds, including Texas, Kansas and South Carolina. Their victories in competitive Senate races and numerous House districts helped the party overturn the Republicans’ control of Congress.

The election outcome is expected to reshape the final two years of Trump’s current presidency. With Democrats controlling both chambers, the party will have greater power to scrutinise the administration, investigate its policies and challenge the president’s legislative priorities.

Democratic control of the Senate will also give the party greater influence over the confirmation of presidential nominees, while its House majority will strengthen its ability to conduct congressional investigations and demand accountability from the administration.

The outcome also raises questions about the Republican Party’s political strategy ahead of the 2028 presidential election. Trump had played a prominent role in the campaign, making the results an important test of his leadership and continued influence over the party.

Reacting to the Republican setbacks, Trump reportedly congratulated Democrats on their performance, while also seeking to distance himself from some of the defeats. Republican leaders, meanwhile, face the task of rebuilding their electoral support and responding to the new congressional balance.

For Democrats, the victories bring both opportunity and responsibility. The party must now demonstrate that it can address voters’ concerns over household expenses, economic pressures and governance while using its congressional majorities to hold the administration accountable.

Although the results mark a significant Democratic comeback, their longer-term political impact will depend on how effectively the party exercises its new congressional power and whether Republicans can recover before the next presidential election.
