In a dramatic turn of events that underscores Nigeria’s fluid political landscape, former Adamawa State governorship candidate, Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed Binani, has defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), barely nine months after leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Binani’s latest move marks her third party affiliation within a year, raising fresh conversations about political realignments ahead of future elections.

The former senator formally sealed her entry into the NDC on Friday, May 1, 2026, during a visit to the party’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson, where she was presented with her membership card.

Speaking shortly after her induction, Binani said her decision was guided by “deep reflection” and a renewed commitment to national development.

“My decision to join the NDC is not taken lightly. It comes after extensive consultations and a sincere evaluation of where I can best contribute to building a more inclusive, transparent, and people-driven political system,” she stated.

She described the NDC as “a platform that aligns with my vision for progressive governance, equity, and grassroots empowerment,” adding that Nigeria requires “a new direction anchored on integrity and purposeful leadership.”

The Merit Newspaper reports that Binani also emphasised that her political journey has always been about service rather than party loyalty.

“I have always maintained that my allegiance is first to the people of Adamawa State and Nigerians at large. Political platforms may change, but my commitment to service, justice, and development remains constant,” she said.

Welcoming her into the party, Dickson described Binani’s defection as a significant boost to the NDC’s growing national appeal.

“We are delighted to receive a leader of Binani’s stature into the NDC. She brings experience, courage, and a strong connection with the grassroots. This is a clear signal that our party is becoming a rallying point for credible Nigerians seeking genuine change,” he said.

The former Bayelsa State governor added that the NDC remains committed to building a formidable political alternative capable of addressing Nigeria’s pressing socio-economic challenges.

“The NDC is not just another party; it is a movement committed to restoring trust in governance, promoting accountability, and delivering real dividends of democracy to Nigerians,” Dickson added.

Political observers say Binani’s latest defection reflects ongoing shifts within Nigeria’s opposition space, as politicians continue to reposition themselves ahead of future electoral contests.

Her move from the APC to ADC, and now to the NDC within a short period, highlights the intensifying search for viable political platforms in a rapidly evolving democratic environment.

As the political season gradually gathers momentum, Binani’s next steps within the NDC—and her potential future ambitions—are expected to remain a subject of keen national interest.
