Ibadan, Nigeria – September 13, 2025 — The political and cultural heartbeat of Ibadanland beat stronger on Friday, September 12, when Gbemileke Alagbe, popularly known as Eleniyan, paid a courtesy visit to Olubadan-designate, Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, ahead of his historic ascension as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadan.

The visit came as Ibadan prepared for the formal enthronement of the former Oyo State governor on September 26, 2025, following the passing of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan. The smooth transition once again underscored the strength of Ibadan’s unique chieftaincy succession system—regarded as one of the most orderly and transparent in Nigeria.

Unlike most Yoruba monarchies where succession is often contested among royal families, the Olubadan system follows two clearly defined lines of ascension: the Egbe Agba (civil line) and the Balogun (military line). Aspirants to the throne rise gradually through 22 chieftaincy ranks, moving up step by step until the most senior chief is crowned Olubadan. This rotational and hierarchical process minimizes disputes and ensures that every holder of the title has earned years of service and experience.

Senator Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State (2003–2007), is the current most senior chief in the Egbe Agba line, which paved the way for his emergence as the 44th Olubadan.

During the courtesy visit, Eleniyan—Chartered Investment Banker, philanthropist, business mogul, and governorship aspirant on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC)—described the Olubadan stool as “a sacred institution that embodies the unity and pride of Ibadanland.”

“This throne is not just about tradition but about leadership that resonates across Oyo State and beyond,” Eleniyan said. “Oba Ladoja’s wisdom as a former governor and his deep connection with the people place him in a unique position to lead Ibadan into a new era of unity and prosperity. As a son of this soil and as someone aspiring to govern Oyo State, I pledge to uphold and promote the cultural values that make Ibadan a beacon of Yoruba civilization.”

Oba Ladoja, who will be 81 years old by the time of his coronation, expressed gratitude for the visit and emphasized the need for harmony between traditional institutions and political leadership.

“The strength of Ibadan has always been in the unity of its people,” Oba Ladoja remarked. “The youths are the torchbearers of tomorrow, and when they embrace tradition, they secure the future. I commend Eleniyan for showing respect to the throne, and I encourage other young leaders to learn that true leadership begins with service to our heritage.”

The courtesy visit, attended by Eleniyan’s entourage, was seen as a symbolic bridging of generations—linking Ibadan’s revered royal institution with the aspirations of youthful political leadership.

Political analysts say the gesture reinforces Eleniyan’s profile not only as a governorship contender for the 2027 elections but also as a politician who understands that cultural legitimacy remains a powerful currency in Oyo politics. His philanthropic work, particularly in advancing girl-child education across Nigeria, continues to strengthen his grassroots appeal.

As Ibadan prepares for the coronation of its 44th monarch, residents and observers alike see in the Olubadan succession system a model of stability rooted in tradition—one that blends respect for history with opportunities for progressive leadership.
