Oluremi Tinubu at 65

By The Merit Newspaper Editorial Board

Abuja, Nigeria — Sunday, September 21, 2025

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, marks her 65th birthday today, Sunday, September 21, 2025, a milestone that blends personal joy with national symbolism. Born on September 21, 1960, just ten days before Nigeria’s independence, her arrival into the world came when her parents — and indeed the entire nation — were basking in the euphoria of newfound freedom.

Today, as she clocks 65, the life of Oluremi Tinubu represents more than the passage of time; it symbolises resilience, leadership, and service to humanity.

Academic and Professional Foundations

Oluremi Tinubu’s academic journey began in Lagos, where she excelled in her early education before pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University). With a keen interest in teaching and mentorship, she trained as an educator, a profession that shaped her passion for empowering young people and women through knowledge.

Her exposure to classroom learning and grassroots challenges would later form the bedrock of her political philosophy grounded in service, accountability, and human development.

A Trail in Politics

Oluremi Tinubu’s political career is as remarkable as it is inspiring. She first came into the national spotlight as the First Lady of Lagos State (1999–2007) during her husband, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s governorship. In that role, she launched the New Era Foundation, a pet project focused on youth development, education, and public health.

Her transition into national politics was marked by her election to the Nigerian Senate in 2011, where she represented Lagos Central Senatorial District for three consecutive terms until 2023. In the Senate, she championed bills on education, social welfare, and women’s empowerment. Her voice became one of reason and strength, often standing for equity, good governance, and inclusivity in policymaking.

Humanitarian Commitments

Throughout her public life, Oluremi Tinubu has consistently dedicated herself to causes that uplift the less privileged. Through her foundation and various community initiatives, she has supported widows, provided scholarships for indigent students, and advocated for the rights of women and children.

Her humanitarian efforts go beyond philanthropy; they embody a philosophy of nation-building through compassion.

The Role of First Lady

Since assuming the role of Nigeria’s First Lady in May 2023, Oluremi Tinubu has redefined the office with her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) — a national program aimed at reducing poverty, enhancing food security, and empowering women and youths across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Under her leadership, RHI has initiated skill acquisition schemes, health outreach programs, and partnerships with international organisations to foster sustainable development.

Her calm disposition, coupled with her principled approach, has endeared her to Nigerians at home and abroad, making her a First Lady admired not only for her proximity to power but for her personal integrity.

Tributes and Reflections

As she turns 65, tributes have poured in from across the political, religious, and social spectrum. Many describe her as “a mother of the nation” whose life exemplifies humility, courage, and faith.

On behalf of Nigerians, The Merit Newspaper Editorial Board joins millions in wishing Senator Oluremi Tinubu a joyous birthday. May her years ahead continue to inspire hope, strengthen communities, and contribute to the progress of Nigeria.

Oluremi Tinubu’s life story mirrors Nigeria’s own journey — from the optimism of independence to the challenges and triumphs of nationhood. At 65, she stands as a reminder that true leadership is not only about titles but about impact, service, and legacy.

Happy Birthday to Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu.
