LAGOS — A growing coalition of youths, women, and concerned stakeholders in Surulere Constituency I has intensified calls for a political shift ahead of the 2027 Lagos State House of Assembly elections, throwing their weight behind Barakat Odunuga-Bakare as their preferred candidate.

The group, drawn from various wards within the constituency, described Odunuga-Bakare as a credible alternative capable of redefining representation in Surulere. Many of them argue that her emergence reflects the aspirations of a younger, more inclusive political base seeking a stronger voice in governance.

Odunuga-Bakare, a former aide to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, recently resigned her position in the Lagos State Government, a move widely interpreted as a strategic step toward contesting the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket. Her supporters say her experience within government, combined with her grassroots engagement, places her in a strong position to represent the constituency effectively.

At the heart of the campaign for her candidacy is a direct appeal to the incumbent lawmaker, Desmond Elliott, who is reportedly seeking a fourth term. Youth leaders and community advocates have urged Elliott to уступ the seat in the interest of fairness, political renewal, and broader inclusion.

“We are not against him as a person,” said one youth coordinator during a stakeholders’ meeting in Surulere. “But leadership must evolve. This is the time to give room for a new voice that understands the current realities of our people, especially young Nigerians.”

Women’s groups in the constituency have also been vocal, framing their support for Odunuga-Bakare as part of a wider push for increased female representation in Lagos politics. According to them, her candidacy is not just symbolic but necessary for balanced governance.

The Merit Newspaper reports that political observers note that while Elliott retains name recognition and legislative experience, the momentum building around Odunuga-Bakare signals a potentially competitive APC primary. The endorsement by grassroots stakeholders suggests a shifting dynamic within the party at the constituency level.

As preparations for the 2027 elections gather pace, Surulere Constituency I is shaping up to be a key battleground, with the contest likely to test the APC’s internal democracy and its responsiveness to calls for generational and gender inclusion.

For now, the message from a significant segment of Surulere residents is clear: they want a change—and they believe Barakat Odunuga-Bakare represents it.
