Ipokia, Ogun State — Residents of Ipokia Local Government Area in Ogun State have expressed renewed optimism following the Federal Government’s approval for oil exploration at Tongeji, a development widely described as a turning point for the historically underserved border community.

Reacting to the approval, Hon. Atele Nunayon Jeremiah, former Ogun West Senatorial District Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), hailed the decision as a long-awaited opportunity to unlock economic growth, employment, and infrastructural development in Ipokia.

“This approval by the Federal Government is a breath of fresh air for the people of Ipokia,” Atele said. “For decades, our local government has remained on the fringes of development despite its vast natural endowments. The oil exploration approval at Tongeji is a recognition of our potential and a chance to rewrite our story.”

Hon. Atele also acknowledged the role of the Ogun State Government under Governor Dapo Abiodun, noting that the administration’s development agenda aligns with the aspirations of the people of Ipokia.

“We commend the Ogun State Government for its ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and economic opportunities across the state,” he said. “When combined with this Federal Government initiative, Ipokia stands to experience meaningful transformation.”

However, Hon. Atele raised concerns over rumours suggesting a possible relocation of the oil exploration project to Ijebu Waterside, warning that such a move could derail hopes and deepen socio-economic frustration among the youth.

“The speculation that this project may be shifted away from Ipokia is deeply troubling,” Atele stated. “If allowed to happen, it will not only rob our people of development but also extinguish the dreams of countless young people who see this project as a pathway to a better future.”

Calling on Governor Abiodun to intervene decisively, Atele emphasized his confidence in the governor’s leadership while urging him to protect Ipokia’s interests.

“As the first citizen of Ogun State, we believe Governor Dapo Abiodun is committed to fairness and inclusive development,” he said. “We respectfully urge him to use his good offices to ensure that this project remains in Ipokia, exactly as approved by the Federal Government.”

He further stressed that the oil exploration initiative represents a rare opportunity for Ipokia to close the development gap between it and other parts of Ogun State.

“The people of Ipokia have been patient for far too long,” Atele added. “This project is our chance to catch up, to contribute meaningfully to the state’s economy, and to secure a future for our children. It must not be taken away from us.”

Hon. Atele, a son of a prominent political family in Ipokia, also appealed to stakeholders to prioritise equity and community inclusion in development planning.

“With the right political will and community engagement, Ipokia can emerge as a major economic hub within Ogun State,” he said. “This is the time for government at all levels to demonstrate a genuine commitment to balanced development.”

As anticipation builds, residents and stakeholders in Ipokia continue to look to the state and federal authorities for clarity and reassurance that the oil exploration project will proceed as approved—bringing long-awaited development to the border community.
