Seyi Makinde on Thursday declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, formally joining the growing list of political figures positioning ahead of Nigeria’s next general election.

Makinde made the declaration at Mapo Hall in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, during a political rally attended by supporters, party members and key stakeholders from different parts of the state.

The Oyo governor said his decision to seek the presidency was driven by the need to offer leadership at the national level, expressing confidence that Nigerians would determine the outcome of the 2027 election through their votes rather than political influence or intimidation.

At the event, The Merit Newspaper reports that Makinde also unveiled a political alliance involving the Peoples Democratic Party and the Allied Peoples Movement, a development that has stirred fresh conversations about possible opposition coalitions ahead of the election.

The rally, which drew large crowds to the historic Mapo Hall, marked a significant moment in the early political build-up to the 2027 contest, as attention gradually shifts from state politics to national leadership succession.

Makinde, currently serving his second term as governor, has in recent months remained a prominent figure in national political discussions, especially within opposition circles. His declaration is expected to intensify political consultations and alignments within and beyond the South-West region.

Political observers say the governor’s announcement could reshape the internal dynamics of the opposition, as parties begin strategic planning ahead of what is expected to be a keenly contested presidential election in 2027.
