Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State, has declared that the influence of “federal might” will not determine the outcome of the 2027 general elections, expressing confidence that Nigerians are prepared to vote independently and reject political intimidation.

Makinde made the remarks on Wednesday during the Oyo State Tourism Summit held at the University of Ibadan International Conference Centre, where he said citizens are increasingly ready to take charge of the democratic process.

According to the governor, although the use of federal power may have influenced previous elections in some states, Nigerians are now more politically aware and determined to make their votes count.

“I believe that this election cycle, federal might will not work. It has worked in Ekiti State in both instances but this time around, Nigerians will show politicians pepper,” Makinde said.

He added that citizens would no longer remain passive observers in the electoral process but would actively participate in choosing their leaders.

Speaking on succession in Oyo State after the end of his administration, Makinde said while he may recommend a preferred successor, the final decision would remain with the people of the state.

The governor stressed the importance of electing a capable leader, warning that a wrong choice could negatively affect the state for years.

“I tell people that I will recommend for Oyo State people, but the decision will rest with the people of Oyo State,” he said. “If you make a mistake and bring someone who will not do good work, it is a one-day event, but the impact will last four years.”

The Merit Newspaper reports that Makinde explained that his administration has focused on building institutions and governance systems that can outlive his tenure, rather than projects tied to one administration.

He noted that leadership may change, but strong systems would ensure continuity and long-term development.

The governor’s comments come amid growing political speculation over who he may support as his successor ahead of the 2027 governorship election. One of the names frequently mentioned is Bimbo Adekanbi, a former commissioner for finance in the state.

Adekanbi previously served in the administration of late Abiola Ajimobi under All Progressives Congress.

Addressing concerns over the possibility of supporting politicians with opposition backgrounds, Makinde said his consideration would be based on loyalty to Oyo State and competence, not party affiliation.

He mentioned individuals such as Morohunkola Thomas and Bimbo Adekanbi as examples of people whose political past should not overshadow their commitment to the state.

“For us, if you’re from Oyo State, loyal to Oyo State, and have capacity, we will support you,” the governor said, adding that his administration remains focused on building a foundation future governments can improve upon rather than dismantle.

Oyo remains the only state currently controlled by Peoples Democratic Party in the South-West, as the party continues to navigate internal divisions involving camps loyal to Makinde and Nyesom Wike.
