The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has emerged as the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) following a consensus primary election held at the Theophilus Ogunlesi Hall, located opposite the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.

The exercise, which attracted party executives, delegates, and stakeholders from across the country, ended with the unanimous adoption of Makinde as the party’s flagbearer ahead of the forthcoming presidential election.

At the conclusion of the primary, the governor was presented with the party flag and Certificate of Return, formally confirming his candidacy for the office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In his acceptance speech, Makinde expressed appreciation to the party leadership and members for what he described as their confidence in his leadership capacity, describing the nomination as a call to national service.

“Innocent citizens and school children are in captivity. As Governor, I carry the burden of ‘Chief Security Officer’ without the constitutional authority to command security agencies. No leader should bear such responsibility without the power to act”
— Governor Seyi Makinde says as he promise to reform national security architecture if elected President in 2027.

He pledged to focus his campaign and eventual administration, if elected, on strengthening national security, revitalising the economy, expanding infrastructure development, and reforming the agricultural sector to ensure food security and job creation.

According to him, Nigeria’s development challenges require strategic planning, accountable leadership, and inclusive governance that prioritises the welfare of citizens across all regions.

“Our nation has enormous potential. What we need is focused leadership and commitment to transform these resources into real development for the people,” he said.

The Merit Newspaper reports that the APM primary has been described by party members as a major step in repositioning the party as a competitive force in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

With his emergence, Makinde is expected to begin full-scale consultations and campaign engagements as the party prepares for the next general election.
