In a significant move that signals early political realignment ahead of the 2026 governorship election in Osun State, elder statesman and former governor, Bisi Akande, on Sunday hosted a high-level meeting with one of his gubernatorial successors, Adegboyega Oyetola, and former deputy governor, Iyiola Omisore, to harmonise political strategies and reinforce unity within their fold.

The closed-door meeting, which held in Osun State brought together three influential figures whose political clout continues to shape the dynamics of the state’s politics. Sources familiar with the meeting disclosed that discussions centred on strengthening internal cohesion, mobilising grassroots support, and presenting a united front for the All Progressive Congress, APC, ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.

Speaking after the meeting, Akande emphasised the importance of unity and discipline within the party, noting that past electoral experiences have underscored the need for collective action.

“Our strength has always been in our unity. We cannot afford divisions at a time when the expectations of the people are high. This meeting is about aligning our vision and ensuring that we move forward as one formidable force,” he said.

Oyetola, who currently serves as Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, described the meeting as timely and strategic, adding that it reflects a shared commitment to reclaiming political ground in the state.

“We are focused on building a stronger structure that resonates with the aspirations of the people of Osun. This engagement is not just symbolic; it is a deliberate step towards ensuring that our party is well-positioned for victory in 2026,” Oyetola stated.

On his part, The Merit Newspaper reports that Omisore highlighted the need for inclusiveness and broader consultation across party lines and stakeholders, stressing that political success would depend on collective participation.

“The future of Osun politics lies in our ability to bring everyone on board—leaders, youths, and grassroots mobilisers. What we are doing here is laying the foundation for a more inclusive and result-oriented approach,” he noted.

Political analysts view the meeting as a strategic consolidation of influence among key leaders, especially in the context of recent shifts within Osun’s political landscape. Observers say the alliance, if sustained, could significantly alter the trajectory of the forthcoming election.

The trio’s meeting comes amid growing political activities in the state, with various interest groups and aspirants intensifying consultations and grassroots engagements. While no official endorsement of a candidate has been announced, insiders suggest that the leaders are working behind the scenes to build consensus around a formidable flagbearer.

As the countdown to the 2026 election begins, the outcome is expected to hinge not only on party strength but also on the ability of political actors to maintain unity and effectively connect with the electorate.

For many residents of Osun State, the meeting of Akande, Oyetola, and Omisore represents more than a routine political gathering—it is a clear indication that the battle for the state’s top seat has quietly begun.
