President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Mr. Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as Minister of Power, forwarding his name to the Senate for screening and confirmation in line with constitutional provisions.

The nomination follows the resignation of the immediate past Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who stepped down from office to pursue elective political ambition.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the appointment is expected to strengthen ongoing reforms in the power sector and deepen efforts to achieve improved electricity supply across the country.

Mr. Tegbe, an indigene of Oyo State, is a seasoned fiscal and economic reform expert with over 35 years of professional experience spanning both the public and private sectors.

The Merit Newspaper reports that Tegbe previously served as Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa, where he led major initiatives in fiscal policy reforms, institutional transformation, governance restructuring, and investment advisory services for governments and private sector organisations.

He is currently the Director-General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP), an institution focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China in line with the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) framework.
In this role, he coordinates strategic engagements between public sector institutions and international partners aimed at advancing economic and social development projects.

The Presidency also noted that Mr. Tegbe brings significant experience in the power sector, having previously engaged in regulatory and institutional reform processes involving key agencies such as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission) and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc).

The Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership), which he currently leads, is also aligned with broader cooperation goals under the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (Forum on China-Africa Cooperation).

The Presidency expressed optimism that, if confirmed by the Senate, Mr. Tegbe will deploy his extensive experience to drive reforms in the power sector, enhance grid stability, and attract sustainable investment in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

President Tinubu, through the statement, urged the Senate to expedite consideration of the nomination, emphasizing the importance of the power sector to national economic growth and industrial development.

The nomination now awaits screening by the upper chamber of the National Assembly.
