By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

Lagos, Nigeria – October 10, 2025

For nearly two months, viewers of TVC Breakfast have noticed the quiet disappearance of Veronica Dan-Ikpoyi, the Head of Presentation and senior anchor at TVC. Her absence has been met with surprising silence, even from journalism students who once admired her logical, balanced, and deeply philosophical delivery. Yet her missing voice reveals something larger about Nigeria’s broadcast culture — our waning attention to journalistic excellence.

Veronica Dan-Ikpoyi is not just a presenter. She is an award-winning broadcaster and documentary journalist whose reports on gender, health, and social issues earned her national and continental recognition, including as a finalist for the CNN-MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year. Over the years, she has set a standard of intellectual clarity and calm professionalism — a style that distinguishes journalism from mere entertainment.

That such a respected figure can vanish from the screen without public concern says much about how we now consume media. In an era dominated by viral soundbites, serious broadcasting seems undervalued. Newsroom audiences cheer controversy but overlook composure; students mimic celebrity anchors instead of studying credible ones. When a society stops noticing the difference, quality slowly fades.

Of course, journalists take leave or reassignment, and her reasons remain private. But the indifference surrounding her absence should still trouble us. It suggests that we are forgetting how to recognise the practitioners who make journalism credible, and how fragile public trust becomes when skill and ethics are treated as replaceable.

Wherever she is, the screen feels quieter without Veronica Dan-Ikpoyi. Her silence should remind both viewers and media institutions that good journalism is not only about being seen — it is about the rare discipline of thinking aloud for the public good.
