Lagos, Nigeria – October 10, 2025

The race for qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Group C will reach a dramatic climax on the final match day, with Nigeria’s Super Eagles facing a tough mathematical and psychological test to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

According to the latest permutations released by supersport.com, Benin Republic, South Africa, Nigeria, and Rwanda all have mathematical chances of clinching the sole automatic qualification ticket — but the odds are now delicately poised.

For Nigeria, the task is as clear as it is daunting: the Super Eagles must defeat Benin Republic by at least three goals and hope that South Africa fail to win against Rwanda. Only then can the former African champions secure passage to the 2026 global football showpiece to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Benin Republic, on the other hand, hold the advantage heading into the final match day. A win against Nigeria would seal their first-ever World Cup qualification, a potential historic moment for the Cheetahs. Remarkably, even a draw could be enough for Gernot Rohr’s men — provided South Africa fail to beat Rwanda.

South Africa, meanwhile, control their own destiny. A victory over Rwanda will send Bafana Bafana to the World Cup, but any slip could open the door for Benin or Nigeria.

For the Super Eagles, it is a familiar yet nerve-racking situation. Once a continental powerhouse, the team has faced mounting criticism after inconsistent performances during the qualifiers. The pressure on both the players and technical crew has intensified, with millions of Nigerian fans demanding redemption after the heartbreak of missing the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Sports analysts believe the fixture against Benin Republic will be a true test of the team’s character. The rivalry between both West African nations has deepened since former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr took charge of Benin, adding a layer of emotional tension to the contest.

“The Super Eagles have the talent to win, but the question is whether they can show hunger, focus, and tactical discipline when it matters most,” said former Nigerian international, Ifeanyi Udeze, while speaking on a sports programme in Lagos.

As the final whistle approaches on this qualification campaign, the fate of Nigeria’s footballing pride rests on one defining match — a 90-minute battle that will decide whether the Super Eagles soar again or crash out of another World Cup race.
