The late Dagrin remains one of the most defining figures in Nigerian street-hop history, and few elements of his work continue to spark as much debate as the beat popularly referred to as “Pon Pon Pon.” For some, it is more than a production; it is a cultural earthquake. For others, it is an early blueprint that modern African music has since outgrown.

There is no denying the raw force embedded in that sound. The heavy percussion, stripped-down arrangement, and aggressive street rhythm captured a specific Lagos reality at a time when Nigerian rap was still fighting for authentic identity. It did not aim for global polish or commercial softness—it aimed for truth. And in that honesty, it created something unforgettable.

This is where the “hot take” argument often emerges: many fans insist that no contemporary Afrobeat or hip hop production has fully replicated that level of raw emotional urgency. Modern beats may be cleaner, more layered, and globally competitive, but critics argue that they sometimes lack the unfiltered street tension that made Dagrin’s sound feel almost documentary in nature.

However, from a more critical and academic standpoint, it is important to separate nostalgia from measurable musical evolution. African music production has advanced significantly since that era. Today’s Afrobeat and hip hop soundscape is richer in instrumentation, more experimental in fusion, and better integrated into global music markets. In that sense, “Pon Pon Pon” cannot be objectively positioned as unbeatable—it belongs to a different production era with different creative constraints and priorities.

Still, its cultural weight cannot be dismissed. The beat represents a turning point in Nigerian music where indigenous expression was not just included but placed at the centre. It helped shape the direction of Afro-street and influenced generations of artists who learned that authenticity could be as powerful as technical perfection.

Ultimately, the legacy of “Pon Pon Pon” is not about whether it has been surpassed or not. It is about what it represented at the time: a fearless, unpolished, and deeply local sound that forced Nigerian hip hop to look inward before it looked outward. Its greatness lies not in being unmatched, but in being foundational.
