Nigeria’s Super Eagles are once again standing at a familiar crossroads of African football history—one where past heartbreaks refuse to stay buried.

In 2019, it was Algeria that shattered Nigerian hopes at the Africa Cup of Nations, knocking the Eagles out in a painful semi-final defeat that still lingers in the memory of fans. Six years later, another scar was added when DR Congo crushed Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualification dreams, edging the Eagles out on penalties in a tense, nerve-wracking playoff in 2025.

Now, fate appears to be circling.
As AFCON 2025 enters the decisive quarter-final stage, one of those two familiar tormentors—Algeria or DR Congo—awaits Nigeria, setting up what many fans are already calling a “revenge match” or a potential repeat of history.

For a team boasting world-class talents and carrying the weight of continental expectations, this looming encounter raises uncomfortable questions: Have the Super Eagles truly evolved, or are they still haunted by the same tactical lapses, psychological fragility, and leadership gaps that have cost them at critical moments?

AFCON 2025 may not just decide Nigeria’s title hopes. It may finally answer whether the Super Eagles are ready to confront their past—or be defined by it once again.
