The countdown to the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony has entered its final week, with the world’s leading football stars preparing to gather in London on Monday, October 26, for the 70th edition of football’s most prestigious individual awards.
The ceremony, scheduled for the London Palladium, will mark the first time the Ballon d’Or has been staged in the British capital since the award was established in 1956. Organised by France Football in partnership with UEFA, this year’s event is expected to attract leading players, coaches, football administrators and other prominent personalities from across the global game.
According to the official announcement, former France international and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry will co-host the ceremony alongside British sports journalist Kate Scott. Henry, who finished second in the 2003 Ballon d’Or voting, brings considerable experience and international recognition to the event, while Scott is known for her football broadcasting work.
The announcement of the hosts has added to the excitement surrounding the ceremony, with attention increasingly turning to the players competing for the men’s and women’s top honours.
Kane, Yamal and Mbappé Attract Attention
Among the leading names attracting attention ahead of the men’s award are England captain Harry Kane, Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal and Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé.
Kane’s prolific goalscoring performances for Bayern Munich and England have strengthened his position in the discussion surrounding this year’s award. The England international is seeking individual recognition after another productive campaign, having continued to demonstrate his importance at both club and international levels.
Yamal, meanwhile, has emerged as one of the most prominent young players in world football. His performances for Barcelona and Spain have earned widespread attention, placing the teenage forward among the names being discussed ahead of the London ceremony.
Mbappé also remains a significant contender, with his goalscoring contributions for Real Madrid and France keeping him in the conversation. The forward is among a distinguished group of nominees whose individual performances will be assessed by the award’s voting panel.
Other notable nominees include defending men’s champion Ousmane Dembélé, Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, eight-time winner Lionel Messi, Jude Bellingham, Rodri, Bruno Fernandes and Senegalese forward Sadio Mané.
However, the final outcome remains uncertain, and the prominence of any nominee in pre-ceremony discussions does not guarantee victory.

Dembélé Faces Competition to Retain Crown
Dembélé enters the ceremony as the defending men’s Ballon d’Or winner after claiming the award in 2025. His nomination places him among the players seeking to add another major individual honour to their careers.
The competition also highlights the breadth of talent represented on the shortlist, bringing together established superstars, prolific goalscorers and younger players making their mark at the highest level.

The award recognises individual performances, achievements during the relevant season and the overall contribution of nominees to the game. The winner will be determined through the established voting process rather than media speculation or public debate alone.
Women’s Football and Other Awards
The London ceremony will extend beyond the men’s Ballon d’Or, with awards recognising achievements in women’s football, emerging talent, goalkeeping, coaching and club performance.
The women’s Ballon d’Or is among the major attractions, alongside the awards for the best young players and goalkeepers. Separate honours will recognise outstanding coaches and clubs in the men’s and women’s games.
The programme also includes the Sócrates Award, which recognises humanitarian initiatives and contributions to social causes.

The range of categories reflects the organisers’ intention to recognise achievements across different areas of football rather than focusing exclusively on the leading individual prizes.
London Takes Centre Stage
The decision to stage the 70th edition in London gives the ceremony added historical significance. The city’s selection pays tribute to England’s Stanley Matthews, who won the inaugural Ballon d’Or in 1956.
The event will begin with red-carpet appearances and media engagements before the official awards ceremony, scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m. British Summer Time, equivalent to 9:00 p.m. in Nigeria.
The Merit Newspaper reports that football supporters unable to attend in person can follow the ceremony through the official broadcasting arrangements. DAZN has announced plans to stream the event live and free in many markets, subject to regional availability and registration requirements.

As the countdown continues, attention will remain on the nominees, the eventual winners and the stories behind their respective campaigns.
For Kane, Yamal, Mbappé, Dembélé and the other contenders, the London ceremony offers an opportunity to receive recognition among the sport’s most accomplished performers.
When the awards are presented on October 26, the results will settle the debate over who claims this year’s honours, bringing the 70th-anniversary edition of the Ballon d’Or to its defining moment.
