In the bustling streets of Lagos, where survival is often a test of endurance, an elderly woman sits quietly in her open and weathered shop. Her display—a modest tray of roasted plantains—tells a story of a struggle for daily bread. Yet, as the hours tick by and the sun’s heat softens into an evening glow, she drifts off to sleep, her frail body succumbing to the fatigue of waiting for customers who seldom arrive.

For many in the African context, such a scene stirs a mix of empathy and contemplation. Traditionally, a woman of her age would be surrounded by children and grandchildren, basking in the comfort of care and familial love. But this grandmother’s reality paints a different picture. Perhaps her children face financial struggles of their own, unable to extend the support they wish they could offer. Or worse still, she may carry the burden of providing for them—a bitter irony in the twilight of her life.

As neighbors and passersby glance at her slumbering figure, questions linger: How did she come to this point? What choices led her to trade the comfort of rest for the uncertainty of a dwindling trade?

For weeks, she has relied on her roasted plantains—a humble delicacy popularly known as boli—to eke out a living. Yet, the stiff competition and economic hardships in Lagos leave little room for hope. Vendors with flashy setups and strategic spots attract the customers she yearns for.

“Sometimes, she doesn’t even sell half of her tray,” remarked a nearby shopkeeper. “She works so hard, but people prefer to buy from the younger sellers with fancy stands.”

In an era where Nigeria’s economic challenges weigh heavily on the vulnerable, this elderly woman’s story is a reflection of countless others striving to survive against mounting odds. Her determination underscores the resilience of Lagosians, but her plight also raises pressing questions about societal care for the elderly in urban Africa.

What can be done for women like her, whose twilight years should be spent in peace, not struggle? Her presence in that little shop is a reminder that while Lagos remains a city of dreams, for some, it’s a place where dreams have long faded, leaving only the will to endure.

In the words of another shopkeeper, “She’s not just selling plantains. She’s selling hope—hope that tomorrow will be kinder.”
