Super Eagles of Nigeria

By Merit Newspaper Editorial Board

There are moments in a nation’s football history when a tournament becomes more than just a competition. It becomes a referendum on pride, resilience, and redemption. For Nigeria’s Super Eagles, the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations is one of those moments.

This is not just another AFCON. It is the first major continental stage since Nigeria painfully failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. For a country that lives and breathes football, that absence was not merely sporting disappointment; it was a national wound. The Super Eagles felt it. Nigerians felt it. And now, AFCON has become the arena where that pain must be transformed into purpose.

You can see it in the way this team plays.
The intensity is higher. The tackles are harder. The pressing is more aggressive. The runs are sharper. This Super Eagles side is not playing like a team merely chasing a trophy; it is playing like a team trying to restore something that was lost — belief.

Missing the World Cup did something important, if uncomfortable: it stripped away complacency. For years, Nigerian football lived on reputation. We expected to show up at big tournaments, expected to compete, expected to matter. When that expectation was shattered, the players were forced to confront a new reality: nothing is guaranteed anymore. That reality has bred hunger — and hunger is the most dangerous fuel in football.

This AFCON squad looks angry in the best possible way.
Not angry at opponents, but angry at failure. Angry at doubt. Angry at being written off. You see it in the way they defend as a unit and attack with urgency. There is no casual football here. Every ball feels contested. Every goal feels personal. That is the psychology of a wounded giant trying to stand tall again.

But beyond pride, there is also pressure — and rightly so.
Nigeria is a country going through extraordinary hardship. Economic stress, insecurity, and social frustration have left millions of citizens feeling exhausted and unheard. In such moments, sport becomes more than entertainment. It becomes emotional release. When the Super Eagles play, Nigerians from Lagos to Maiduguri, from Ibadan to Enugu, forget their struggles for 90 minutes. The green and white jersey becomes a reminder that excellence is still possible.

That is why this AFCON matters so much.
A Super Eagles victory would not solve Nigeria’s problems, but it would offer something powerful: collective joy. It would give a weary nation a reason to smile together, to believe together, and to remember what unity feels like. The players know this. They know they are carrying more than just their boots and tactics onto the pitch — they are carrying the hopes of a country desperate for good news.

There is also something symbolic about winning AFCON after missing the World Cup.
It would be Nigeria’s way of telling the football world: we stumbled, but we did not fall. It would reassert our status as a continental powerhouse and remind Africa that Nigerian football, when motivated, remains one of the most formidable forces on the continent.

Tactically and mentally, this team looks built for that mission.
The blend of youthful energy and experienced leadership has created a squad that can both endure pressure and exploit opportunities. More importantly, they are playing with a collective purpose. This is not a group of stars chasing individual glory; it is a team chasing redemption.

That is what makes this AFCON different.
The Super Eagles are not just trying to win matches. They are trying to rewrite a story — from World Cup heartbreak to African triumph. They are trying to give Nigerians something to be proud of again. They are trying to prove, to themselves and to the world, that failure did not define them.

In that sense, AFCON is not just a tournament. It is Nigeria’s football trial by fire.

And if the way this team is playing is anything to go by — fierce, focused, and fearless — the Super Eagles do not just want to win this AFCON. They need to.
