The late Chief Imam of Ilorin, Sheikh Bashir Soliu

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

Ilorin, Kwara State — The Ilorin Emirate and the wider Muslim community have been thrown into mourning following the death of the Chief Imam of Ilorin, Sheikh Bashir Soliu, a revered Islamic scholar and spiritual leader whose influence spanned more than four decades.

The death of the respected cleric was confirmed on Monday, though details surrounding the circumstances of his passing were not immediately disclosed as of press time.

Born in Ilorin, Kwara State, Sheikh Bashir Soliu devoted his life to Islamic scholarship, religious leadership and community service. Through years of rigorous learning, teaching and moral guidance, he rose to become one of the most influential religious figures in Kwara State and beyond.

He was appointed the 12th Chief Imam of the Ilorin Emirate in 1983, a position he held for over 40 years. His long tenure made him one of the most enduring religious leaders in the history of the ancient emirate.

Throughout his reign, the late Chief Imam was widely respected for his deep knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence, firm but calm leadership style, and unwavering commitment to peace and unity. He consistently used the pulpit to preach tolerance, mutual respect and harmonious coexistence, not only among Muslims but across religious and ethnic lines in the state.

Sheikh Soliu played a critical role in shaping Islamic discourse in Ilorin, mentoring generations of clerics and students, and offering guidance on religious and social issues affecting the community. His counsel was often sought by traditional rulers, government officials and community leaders, particularly on matters relating to faith, morality and peaceful coexistence.

Beyond the mosque, he was regarded as a stabilising force within the Ilorin Emirate, especially during periods of social or political tension. Many residents credit his calm interventions and prayers for helping to preserve peace in the city over the years.

Tributes began pouring in shortly after news of his death broke, with many describing him as a father figure, a bridge-builder and a custodian of Islamic values. Islamic organisations, scholars and community leaders across Kwara State have described his passing as a monumental loss to Islam and humanity.

Funeral arrangements and official statements from the Ilorin Emirate Council are expected to be announced later.

Sheikh Bashir Soliu is remembered for a life defined by service, humility and devotion to God and community. His legacy, many believe, will continue to shape religious life in Ilorin for generations to come.
