Former Kano State Governor and the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has announced his resignation from the party with immediate effect.

Kwankwaso made this known in a press statement dated March 29, 2026, explaining that his decision was driven by the need for strategic political realignment in response to the changing dynamics of Nigeria’s political environment.

The Merit Newspaper reports that the former NNPP National Leader expressed appreciation to the party for giving him the platform to serve as its presidential flag bearer during the 2023 general elections. He described his exit as a difficult but necessary decision.

According to him, the direction of current political developments in the country makes it important for him to identify with another political platform that he believes will provide a better opportunity to pursue meaningful national transformation.

“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” Kwankwaso stated.
