ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday hosted the President of Madagascar, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, in a move aimed at strengthening diplomatic relations and expanding economic cooperation between both countries.
President Randrianirina, who arrived at the State House in the afternoon, was received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, before proceeding to a closed-door meeting with President Tinubu.
The visit marks the Malagasy leader’s first official trip to Nigeria since assuming office in October 2025 and is expected to open a new chapter in bilateral relations between Africa’s most populous nation and the Indian Ocean island country.
The Merit Newspaper reports that although details of the discussions were not immediately disclosed, the meeting is understood to be focused on enhancing cooperation in trade, agriculture, maritime security, regional development, climate resilience and continental integration.

Monday’s engagement followed an earlier bilateral meeting between both leaders on the sidelines of the Africa Forward Summit held in Nairobi, Kenya, in May, where they explored opportunities for stronger diplomatic and economic partnerships.
The Abuja meeting also underscores growing efforts by African leaders to deepen intra-African cooperation in line with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and broader aspirations for economic integration across the continent.
President Tinubu has repeatedly advocated stronger regional partnerships and African-led solutions to economic and developmental challenges, while President Randrianirina has embarked on diplomatic engagements aimed at expanding Madagascar’s strategic alliances and investment opportunities.
Observers say the high-level meeting could pave the way for increased collaboration in agriculture, energy, maritime affairs and climate adaptation, areas considered vital to the sustainable development of both nations.

The visit is also regarded as a significant milestone in Nigeria-Madagascar relations, with both countries expected to intensify engagement on issues of mutual interest and contribute to the broader agenda of African unity and prosperity.
