UYO, AKWA IBOM — It was a memorable encounter for members of the Smart Boys Movement as they crossed paths with Nigerian football legend and former Super Eagles captain, Vincent Enyeama, at his hotel, Vinpy Hotel, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The members of the organisation were in Akwa Ibom State for an executive meeting of the Smart Boys Movement, which was held at Vinpy Hotel. It was during their visit to the hotel that they unexpectedly met Enyeama and exchanged pleasantries with the celebrated former Nigerian international.
The encounter brought together four executive members of the Smart Boys Movement: Honourable Funso Jide Adekunle, popularly known as Honourable Fushi, National Executive Director; Honourable Atele Jeremiah Nunayon, National Publicity Secretary; Honourable Olaoluwa Akinwande Akinsola, National Youth Mobilisation Director; and Comrade Godwin Emmanuel Etim, Akwa Ibom State Youth Mobilisation Director.

Speaking on the unexpected encounter, Honourable Funso Jide Adekunle, fondly called honourable Fushi, described it as a pleasant and memorable moment for the delegation, noting that Enyeama remains an iconic figure whose contribution to Nigerian football cannot be overlooked.

“We were in Akwa Ibom for our executive meeting, which was held at Vinpy Hotel. We did not come with the intention of visiting Vincent Enyeama, so meeting him at the hotel was a pleasant surprise. It was a great opportunity to exchange pleasantries with a football legend whose name has become synonymous with excellence and outstanding service to Nigeria,” Adekunle said.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Smart Boys Movement, Honourable Atele Jeremiah Nunayon, said the encounter was particularly significant because of Enyeama’s remarkable achievements both for Nigeria and at club level.

“Vincent Enyeama is a legend of Nigerian football. His career speaks volumes about discipline, commitment, resilience and leadership. Meeting him unexpectedly at his hotel was a memorable experience, and we are delighted that our executive meeting at Vinpy Hotel provided the opportunity,” Nunayon stated.

Also speaking, the National Youth Mobilisation Director, Honourable Olaoluwa Akinwande Akinsola, described Enyeama as an inspiration to young Nigerians, particularly those aspiring to make a difference through sports.

“For young people, Vincent Enyeama’s journey is a powerful example of what talent, hard work and determination can achieve. He rose through the ranks to become one of Africa’s most respected goalkeepers. Meeting him was therefore a moment we will cherish,” Akinsola said.

The Akwa Ibom State Youth Mobilisation Director of the movement, Comrade Godwin Emmanuel Etim, expressed delight at the encounter, describing Enyeama as a distinguished Nigerian whose achievements have continued to bring pride to the country.

“It was a wonderful experience meeting Vincent Enyeama here in Uyo. His achievements have made him a respected figure not only in Nigeria but across Africa. We are happy that our executive meeting was held at Vinpy Hotel and that it provided the opportunity to meet him personally,” Etim said.

Enyeama remains one of the most accomplished goalkeepers in Nigerian and African football history. He earned 101 international caps for the Super Eagles between 2002 and 2015 and represented Nigeria at three FIFA World Cup tournaments — in 2002, 2010 and 2014.

He was also a key member of the Nigerian squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, where he played an important role before subsequently captaining the national team.

At club level, Enyeama enjoyed an illustrious career spanning almost two decades. He played for Nigerian giants Enyimba, Israeli side Hapoel Tel Aviv and French Ligue 1 club Lille OSC, among other clubs.

With Enyimba, he won back-to-back CAF Champions League titles, while his performances for both club and country earned him recognition as one of Africa’s outstanding goalkeepers. He became particularly renowned for his reflexes, shot-stopping ability, composure and leadership between the posts.

For the Smart Boys Movement members, the meeting with Enyeama was an unexpected highlight of their visit to Akwa Ibom, turning their executive meeting at Vinpy Hotel into an opportunity to briefly interact with one of Nigeria’s most celebrated football personalities.

The members expressed their appreciation for the warm encounter and wished the football legend continued success, describing his career as an enduring source of inspiration to Nigerian youths and football enthusiasts across the country.
