South Sudan on Fire

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

Nasir, a town in South Sudan, was bombed at approximately 11 p.m. last night by Ugandan helicopters, raising fresh concerns about the ongoing conflict in the region. Eyewitnesses fear that the attack may have targeted civilians, further escalating tensions in the war-torn country.

A Sudanese-American woman, who requested anonymity for security reasons, condemned the attack in a phone interview with our correspondents. She accused the South Sudanese government of deliberately targeting the Nuer ethnic group.

“We are not rebels; we are just a tribe that the government does not want to see,” she said. “The Vice President is Nuer, and when he attempted to run for president 12 years ago, it caused fear among the Dinka leadership. Since then, the Nuer have been marginalized.”

South Sudan has long been plagued by ethnic and political divisions, particularly between the two largest ethnic groups, the Dinka and the Nuer. The country gained independence from Sudan in 2011 but soon descended into civil war, with clashes often framed along ethnic lines.

The anonymous source further claimed that President Salva Kiir, who belongs to the Dinka tribe, has lost control over governance due to alleged alcohol abuse.

“The president is suffering from alcohol addiction. He doesn’t know what’s happening in the country, but his tribe controls him,” she alleged.

The South Sudanese government has not yet issued an official statement regarding the bombing or the accusations. However, the incident in Nasir raises urgent questions about Uganda’s role in South Sudan’s conflict and the fate of civilians caught in the crossfire.

As tensions continue to rise, international observers and humanitarian organizations are calling for an independent investigation into the airstrike and its impact on civilians.

This is a developing story. More updates to follow.
