Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso – April 2025
The Government of Burkina Faso has taken significant steps to improve access to education through recent policy reforms, but viral claims circulating on social media suggesting that all levels of education are now completely free and that all university students receive a monthly salary of 100,000 CFA francs are exaggerated and not officially confirmed.

In January 2025, President Ibrahim Traoré launched the Presidential Initiative for Quality Education for All (IPEQ) aimed at enhancing the country’s education sector. The initiative focuses on upgrading infrastructure, standardizing diplomas, and boosting teacher training nationwide.

While primary education in Burkina Faso is officially free and compulsory for children aged 6 to 16, families still shoulder costs such as school supplies and uniforms. There is currently no nationwide policy offering free education at all levels or automatic monthly stipends for university students.

However, the government, through the National Fund for Education and Research (FONER) and in partnership with the Burkinabè National Lottery (LONAB), signed a financing agreement in June 2024 to support non-scholarship students. The agreement allocates 1.25 billion CFA francs over five years, providing financial aid to public university students, especially those in master’s and doctoral programs, to assist with research activities and participation in academic events.

Education officials say these reforms are aimed at gradually reducing inequality and improving the quality of learning, but caution against misinformation.

“We are committed to making education more accessible, but it’s important for citizens to rely on verified information,” a senior education ministry official stated.

The government has encouraged the public to follow updates from official channels as the education reform efforts continue.
