Ambassador Dr. Babatunde Oke

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

Ambassador Dr. Babatunde Oke has officially resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s failure to provide credible and principled opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The resignation, which took effect on Thursday, July 17, 2025, was made public through a formal letter addressed to the party’s chairman in Ward 10, Boluwaduro Local Government Area, Osun State, and shared across his social media platforms.

The Merit Newspaper reports that in his resignation letter, Oke stated, “The decision did not come easily but after deep consultations and wide reflections, it has become so obvious to me that the party no longer represents the focused, credible and reliable opposition Nigeria urgently needs at this precarious moment of our political life.”

He expressed concern over what he described as the increasing lack of credible and coordinated opposition from the PDP, particularly at a time when strong voices are needed to check the excesses of the ruling party.

“More disturbing is the anti-party activities by some stakeholders in the party as well as the impunities,” he added.

Ambassador Oke, a Fellow of the Institute for International Strategic Studies Nigeria (FIISSN), also hinted at aligning with other Nigerians in building a new political front.

“I am joining forces with patriots across board to form a more robust, responsible, responsive, well-focused opposition movement whose ideals is built on justice, progress and equity as well as decent democracy and governance with decorum,” he wrote in a social media post following the announcement.

While expressing gratitude for the opportunity to have served as a member of the PDP, Oke reaffirmed his commitment to working for a better Nigeria.

“I look forward to building a more progressive, purposeful, visionary and prosperous nation,” he reiterated.

Ambassador Dr. Babatunde Oke’s resignation adds to the growing list of prominent members who have recently left the PDP, raising fresh questions about the party’s internal cohesion and role as Nigeria’s leading opposition platform.
