FG Declares Friday Public Holiday for Maulid Nabiy

Abuja, Nigeria – 3 September, 2025

The Federal Government has declared Friday, September 5, 2025, as a public holiday to mark Maulid Nabiy, the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government.

In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the minister congratulated Muslims across the country and in the Diaspora on the occasion.

“On behalf of the Federal Government, I extend warm greetings to all Muslim faithful. I urge Nigerians to use this period to reflect on the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, embrace unity, and pray for peace, progress, and prosperity in our nation,” Tunji-Ojo said.

The government urged citizens to conduct themselves peacefully during the holiday while fostering love and tolerance across religious and ethnic divides.

The Merit Newspaper reports that Maulid Nabiy is observed annually by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
