The criminal code on false pretence now collides with modern dating culture. What does it mean for law enforcement, gender politics, and society?

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

The Rivers State Police Command has done Nigerians a great favour. In a country plagued by armed robbery, cybercrime, banditry, and kidnapping, they have finally identified the real menace to society: women collecting transport fare from men and failing to show up for dates.

Yes, you read that correctly. Our police, armed with the Nigerian Criminal Code’s Section 419, have declared war not only on Yahoo boys but also on Yahoo babes.

For the record, Section 419 states:
“Any person who by false pretence, and with intent to defraud, obtains from any other person anything capable of being stolen… is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for three years.”

So, if you send ₦5,000 to “Kemi” for Uber and she vanishes into thin WhatsApp air, congratulations — you may have just been defrauded, and Kemi could, in theory, face three years behind bars.

The Comedy of Criminal Law

On one level, this is hilarious. Imagine a police docket that reads: “Exhibit A: ₦3,500 transfer for Bolt ride. Offence: romantic fraud. Charge: Section 419.” The courtroom drama would be Shakespearean.

But on another level, the joke is on us. Nigeria has long been synonymous with 419 scams — the very phrase has become shorthand for global fraud. Now, instead of tackling billion-naira cyber syndicates, our police appear ready to prosecute failed rendezvous. The law, as always, is blind; but in this case, it may also be short-sighted.

Social Media Reacts

Unsurprisingly, Nigerians on social media have turned the warning into both satire and serious commentary.

On X (formerly Twitter), one user quipped:

“So police cannot arrest politicians looting billions, but they are ready to jail a babe for ₦2k tfare? Nigeria is a Netflix comedy.”

Another wrote:

“Ladies, your Uber receipts will soon be Exhibit B in court. Better start saving them.”

Others took the warning seriously. A Facebook commenter argued:

“It may sound funny, but deception is deception. If you collect money under false pretence, that is fraud. People must learn that integrity matters even in dating.”

And then came the gender war. A female user fired back:

“What about men who promise marriage just to sleep with women? Is that not also 419? When will police address that?”

The reactions capture the public mood: amusement, anger, and genuine debate about honesty and accountability.

Policy Matters

The Rivers Police may be right in principle: deceit for financial gain, however small, is fraud. Yet, in practice, does the criminal justice system need another layer of “romantic litigation” when Nigeria’s courts already groan under the weight of real crimes? Is this the best use of police time and state resources?

A smarter policy response would be to treat this as a public education issue. Nigerians need to understand that integrity matters in all spheres of life — business, politics, and yes, even dating. If the state is serious, campaigns on honesty in relationships could be woven into broader anti-fraud and anti-corruption drives. After all, corruption often starts with the little lies we excuse in our private lives.

The Bigger Picture

There is a cultural lesson here too. Our generation has commodified romance to the point where dating is often reduced to bank transfers, “alerts,” and transactional expectations. When money becomes the centrepiece of affection, deceit becomes inevitable. Whether it’s ₦3,000 tfare or $3 million in a Ponzi scheme, dishonesty corrodes trust in society.

Between Satire and Seriousness

So, should women go to jail for failing to show up after collecting transport fare? Legally, yes — Section 419 says so. Socially, it sounds absurd. Politically, it reveals how unserious we sometimes appear in tackling crime.

The Rivers Police may have intended to scare young women into honesty, but they have also sparked a necessary national conversation. If we truly want to fight fraud, we must do more than threaten women with jail over Uber fare. We must rebuild a culture where trust, sincerity, and accountability matter — whether in a billion-dollar oil deal or in the simple promise of showing up for a date.

Because if Nigeria ever gets to the point where magistrates are sentencing lovers over transport fare, then truly, the joke will no longer be funny.
