Lagos, Nigeria – Monday, September 15, 2025

As schools across Nigeria reopen today, millions of pupils and students return to classrooms filled with renewed expectations. The start of a new academic term is always a moment of hope — hope for better learning, improved performance, and brighter opportunities ahead. Yet, it is also a moment that calls for sober reflection on the state of education in our country.

While progress has been recorded in some areas, challenges remain visible. Many schools still struggle with inadequate infrastructure, large class sizes, and limited access to modern learning tools. Parents, too, continue to bear the heavy burden of rising costs, while teachers — the backbone of education — often work under less-than-ideal conditions.

The Merit Newspaper believes that school resumption should not only be seen as a return to normal academic routine, but also as a reminder that education is a shared responsibility. Governments at all levels must continue to prioritize funding for schools, strengthen teacher training, and provide safer learning environments. Private school owners, on their part, should balance profit-making with the responsibility of upholding high standards and ensuring accessibility.

Equally important is the role of parents and guardians. Beyond paying fees, they are partners in the education process. Their encouragement, discipline, and support at home remain essential to a child’s overall development.

As Nigeria looks toward the future, we must recognize that every new school term represents an opportunity to do better. If government, schools, parents, and communities work together, we can steadily build an education system that not only meets today’s needs but also equips our children to thrive in tomorrow’s world.

Each new school term is an opportunity to recommit to education — together, we can nurture classrooms that secure Nigeria’s future.
