Lagos, Nigeria – October 5, 2025

The city of Lagos made history at the weekend as it hosted Africa’s first-ever E1 Electric Powerboat Grand Prix, marking a major leap in Nigeria’s drive for clean energy innovation, sustainable tourism, and global recognition.

After two days of thrilling competition on the Lagos Lagoon, Team Brazil, led by world-class racers Timmy Hansen and Ieva Millere-Hagin, emerged champions, defeating strong rivals including Team Rafa and Team Drogba Global Africa in a stunning finale that had thousands of spectators cheering from the waterfront.

Sanwo-Olu Applauds Winners, Reaffirms Lagos’ Global Vision

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu congratulated the victorious Team Brazil and praised the success of the event, describing it as a milestone that placed Lagos firmly on the global sports and innovation map.

“Beyond the competition, the E1 Lagos GP represented our city’s commitment to innovation, clean energy, and sustainable development. It was inspiring to see Lagos take its place on the global stage as a city that embraces progress and possibility,”
Sanwo-Olu said in a post on his official social media account.

The governor added that Lagos’s successful hosting of the event demonstrated the city’s readiness to rival international destinations such as Monaco, London, and Jeddah, all of which host the prestigious E1 Championship series.

A Historic First for Africa

The E1 Lagos GP marks the first time the electric powerboat world championship has been staged on African waters. The event transformed the Victoria Island coastline into a futuristic race circuit where sleek, zero-emission RaceBird boats skimmed across the lagoon using advanced electric hydrofoil technology.

The championship, which promotes environmentally friendly competition, attracted global attention not only for its thrilling races but also for its message of sustainability and innovation.

International sports icons including Didier Drogba, Rafael Nadal, and Tom Brady own teams within the E1 series, giving Lagos a unique opportunity to connect with the global community through sports, technology, and entertainment.

Nigeria’s Push for Renewable Energy and Blue Economy Growth

The Lagos event aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to renewable energy and the blue economy. The president had earlier lauded the E1 Championship for choosing Lagos as Africa’s debut host city, describing it as a statement of intent for Nigeria’s climate and energy ambitions.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasised that the event was part of a broader plan to develop marine transport infrastructure and promote eco-friendly tourism through the responsible use of the state’s waterways.

“The E1 Lagos GP is more than a race,” Sanwo-Olu said at the flag-off ceremony. “It is a demonstration of our belief that progress and sustainability can coexist. Lagos will continue to champion initiatives that make the city a hub for innovation and clean energy in Africa.”

Tourism and Economic Impact

The hosting of the E1 Lagos GP created a festive atmosphere across the city, boosting local businesses and showcasing Nigeria’s tourism potential. Hotels around Victoria Island, Lekki, and Ikoyi reported increased bookings, while food vendors, transport operators, and hospitality providers benefitted from the influx of visitors and participants.

Observers noted that the successful organisation of the international event is a testament to Lagos’ growing reputation as a global destination for major sporting and entertainment activities. The event also reinforced investor confidence in Lagos’ capacity to host world-class, technology-driven gatherings.

Sustainability Beyond the Race

Environmental experts have described the E1 Lagos GP as an important reminder of the need for African cities to embrace sustainable innovation. The all-electric boats used in the race operate with zero carbon emissions, underscoring the potential of clean energy technology to reduce environmental impact while inspiring a new generation of innovators.

The event’s success has sparked discussions about how Lagos can integrate green technology into its long-term economic strategy — from marine transportation and energy systems to urban planning and youth development.

Global Recognition and the Road Ahead

The Lagos GP is one of several stops on the E1 World Championship calendar, joining major cities like Venice, Monaco, and Jeddah. The race is expected to become an annual event, bringing with it increased global exposure, partnerships, and investment opportunities.

E1 organisers have confirmed plans to expand the championship to more cities and teams in the coming years, and Lagos is now positioned to play a leading role in the sport’s global development.

“I am proud of what we achieved this weekend and even more confident about the future we are building for Lagos,”
Governor Sanwo-Olu reiterated.

A Win Beyond the Water

Team Brazil’s victory may have ended the weekend’s race, but for Lagos, the journey is just beginning. The success of the E1 Lagos GP symbolises a new chapter — one where Africa is not just a participant but a pioneer in the future of sustainable innovation, technology, and sports.
