former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, Addressing gathering in Osun

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

In a recent outburst during a political gathering in Osun State, former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, claimed in Yoruba, “Since Tinubu got to power, rain doesn’t fall as it used to. The world has turned upside down. Birds don’t sound like birds. Rats don’t sound like rats.”

While the statement may have drawn applause from his supporters, it reflects a disturbing trend in Nigerian politics—using divine exaggeration and metaphors to spread discontent and manipulate public emotion.

This comment is not only baseless, but it is also inhumane and dishonorable, especially coming from someone who owes his political rise largely to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Aregbesola’s imagery attempts to present Tinubu as a force disrupting nature itself—an implication that borders on blasphemy rather than political critique.

Let us be clear: the rains still fall, the sun still rises and sets, birds still chirp, and rats—well—still squeak. The world remains upright, not upside down.

Rather than engaging in constructive criticism or offering alternative solutions to Nigeria’s challenges, Aregbesola has chosen the path of rhetoric and ridicule. Such comments are not only misleading but also insulting to the intelligence of Nigerians who expect maturity from their leaders—not melodrama.

What Nigeria needs is robust policy discussion, not poetic doom-mongering. If Aregbesola disagrees with Tinubu’s policies, let him engage with facts, not fables. Nigeria’s political space deserves better.
