Dr. Sharaf Gbadebo Raji

Renowned Islamic scholar, Dr. Sharaf Gbadebo Raji, has come under fire from young Islamic scholars and concerned Nigerians for his recent comments condemning photography as forbidden in Islam. The controversy arose following Dr. Raji’s trip to Qatar, where he received an award for translating notable Islamic Arabic books into Yoruba.

While Dr. Raji has consistently maintained that both photography and being photographed are prohibited by Allah, his appearance in photographs taken at the award ceremony and shared widely on social media has drawn sharp criticism.

Many have accused the scholar of hypocrisy, questioning how he could preach against photography yet participate in public events where his images were captured and shared. A concerned scholar, Ahmed Mustapha, said, “If Dr. Raji believes photography is truly forbidden, how does he reconcile his participation in the award ceremony in Qatar where his pictures were taken and displayed for all to see?”

Others raised questions about the practicality of his stance, pointing out that modern documentation processes, such as obtaining an international passport or a National Identification Number (NIN), require photographs. A social commentator, Maryam Adebayo, remarked, “Does Dr. Gbadebo not have a passport to travel to Qatar? How did he bypass the mandatory photograph requirement? If he doesn’t have an NIN, then the government needs to investigate because every citizen is expected to comply with identification processes.”

The criticism extended beyond religious scholars. Young Nigerians on social media highlighted the implications of Dr. Raji’s stance, with some suggesting that such rigid interpretations could create gaps in essential civic processes. Yusuf Abdul, a youth advocate, stated, “Photographs are not just for vanity; they are a critical part of identification. Without proper identification systems, how do we tackle issues like crime and fraud?”

The backlash has reignited debates about the intersection of Islamic principles and modern realities. Critics argue that while it is essential to uphold religious values, there must be room for flexibility to accommodate contemporary societal needs.

Dr. Raji has yet to respond to the criticisms, but the incident has sparked widespread discussions within the Islamic community about the relevance and application of traditional teachings in the modern era. Many are calling for scholars to provide balanced interpretations that align with current realities without compromising Islamic principles.

As the controversy unfolds, Nigerians continue to await a formal clarification from Dr. Gbadebo on his stance and the seeming contradiction between his teachings and actions.
