IBADAN — Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day across the state to commemorate the beginning of the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH.

The declaration was conveyed in a statement issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, and a circular signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Musibau Adetunji Babatunde.

According to the governor, the decision was made as a mark of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community in Oyo State and beyond.

“As a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community, we have declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day in the state,” Makinde said.

The Merit Newspaper reports that the governor congratulated Muslims in Oyo State and across Nigeria on witnessing the commencement of Hijrah 1448AH and prayed that Almighty Allah would grant them the opportunity to celebrate many more years in good health and prosperity.

Makinde urged residents of the state to use the occasion to reflect on the lessons of Hijrah, which symbolises sacrifice, perseverance, peace and devotion to God.

He also called on the people to continue to pray for peace, unity and sustainable development in Oyo State and Nigeria, stressing the importance of religious harmony and peaceful coexistence among adherents of different faiths.

“The lessons of Hijrah should inspire us to remain committed to peaceful coexistence, mutual understanding and the collective progress of our state and nation,” the governor stated.

Hijrah marks the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD, an event regarded as a turning point in Islamic history and the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar.

Government offices and public institutions across Oyo State are expected to observe the work-free day, while essential service providers will continue to operate as required.

The declaration continues the Makinde administration’s tradition of recognising significant religious celebrations and promoting inclusiveness among the diverse communities in the state.
