President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will on Tuesday depart Abuja for Lagos to headline the 50th anniversary celebration of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and commission a series of strategic national infrastructure projects, in what is shaping up to be a symbolic and significant week for Nigeria’s leadership in West Africa.
As Chairman of ECOWAS, President Tinubu is expected to lead a delegation of West African leaders in commemorating the golden jubilee of the regional bloc, established in 1975 to foster economic integration and political cooperation across the sub-region.
The Lagos leg of the ECOWAS@50 celebration will feature a reenactment of the historic signing of the ECOWAS treaty at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Victoria Island—a symbolic nod to the treaty’s original signing in Lagos five decades ago.
A high-level summit will follow at Eko Hotels and Suites, where President Tinubu will deliver a keynote address reflecting on the bloc’s milestones, challenges, and future prospects. Also expected to address the gathering is General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), Nigeria’s former Head of State and the only surviving signatory to the original ECOWAS treaty. Gowon’s presence is seen as a crucial link between the past and the present.
Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, former Minister of External Affairs and current Chairman of the NIIA, will present a review of ECOWAS’s 50-year journey, to be further analyzed by a panel of regional experts. The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Touray, will deliver the welcome address.

Beyond the symbolism of regional unity, President Tinubu will use the opportunity to push forward his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development with the commissioning of landmark projects on Saturday, May 31.
Key among them is Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, a long-awaited mega project designed to connect the nation’s commercial hub with the southern coastal states. The highway is expected to revolutionize transportation and boost trade and tourism.
The President will also inaugurate the Lekki Deep Sea Port Tax Credit Concrete Road, a key link in Nigeria’s maritime logistics network, and flag off Section II of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway alongside the 7th Axial Road.
Virtually, President Tinubu will commission critical roads in the North, including the Kano-Kanwar-Danja-Hadejiya Section II Road and Yakasai-Zalli Road, as well as flag off projects such as the Kano Northern By-pass, Zaria-Hunkuyi-Dabai Section I, Dabai-Kafur-Malumfashi, and Malumfashi-Dayi-Yashe-Gidan Mutum Daya Section III.

“These projects are more than concrete and asphalt; they represent a lifeline for economic inclusion, regional integration, and national renewal,” a senior official at the Ministry of Works told this reporter under anonymity.
The President is also expected to observe the Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the State House Mosque in Dodan Barracks during his Lagos stay before returning to Abuja.
Analysts see the twin events—the ECOWAS celebration and infrastructure commissioning—as strategic moves by President Tinubu to solidify Nigeria’s leadership in West Africa while addressing critical development needs at home.
“This is both a regional and domestic political statement,” said Dr. Olufemi Adebayo, a Lagos-based political analyst. “It shows Nigeria is still the engine room of West Africa, and that under Tinubu, the country is serious about infrastructure diplomacy.”
ECOWAS, now a 15-member bloc, has over the years faced challenges including coups, economic instability, and cross-border insecurity. Yet, it remains a key driver of integration in the region, with Nigeria playing a pivotal role in its formation and evolution.

As Lagos welcomes dignitaries and witnesses new infrastructure milestones, all eyes will be on how President Tinubu uses this moment to shape the narrative of regional leadership and domestic progress.
