By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

Many Nigerian youths may hesitate to read A Journey in Service by Ibrahim Babangida due to the historical controversies surrounding his leadership. However, setting aside political sentiments, this book offers invaluable insights into leadership, national development, and the role of young Nigerians in shaping the country’s future. One of its most compelling sections is the epilogue, Letter to the Next Generation, in which Babangida speaks directly to the youth, offering guidance based on his vast experiences.

Here are key reasons why Nigerian youths should read this book and the vital lessons from its epilogue:

Lessons on Leadership and Responsibility

Babangida outlines his journey through three phases: his time as a soldier, his years in national leadership, and his retirement. Each stage presents challenges and responsibilities, offering valuable lessons for young people aspiring to lead in any sector. He emphasizes patriotism, service, and the sacrifices required to uphold national integrity, encouraging young Nigerians to understand governance, national unity, and collective progress.

The Power of Youth in Nation-Building

The epilogue highlights Nigeria’s youthful population, with about 70% of its citizens under 30. Babangida describes this as an ‘opportunity bomb’ that, if harnessed, can drive national transformation. He urges young Nigerians to take ownership of their country’s future by actively participating in governance and contributing to development rather than merely critiquing from the sidelines.

Technology, Education, and the Changing Nigerian Identity

Babangida acknowledges the impact of globalization, technology, and education on modern Nigerian youths. He praises their exposure, intelligence, and limitless potential. Unlike previous generations, today’s youth have access to vast knowledge and tools to create change. His message reinforces that technology and education should be used as instruments for development rather than distractions.

Overcoming Ethnic and Religious Divisions

One of the most profound observations in the epilogue is how Nigerian youths are increasingly united by common aspirations rather than ethnic or religious affiliations. Babangida notes that, through technology and shared experiences, young Nigerians now see themselves as part of a collective identity rather than as members of divided factions. He encourages them to foster national unity and work together to solve pressing challenges such as poverty, unemployment, and inadequate infrastructure.

The Power of National Networks

A crucial point raised in the epilogue is the importance of young Nigerians interacting across ethnic, religious, and regional boundaries. Babangida advises that building strong national networks fosters peace, understanding, and cooperation. He urges youths to travel across Nigeria, learn about different cultures, and embrace diversity to strengthen national unity.

Taking Initiative and Leading Now

Rather than waiting for opportunities to be handed to them, Babangida’s message to the youth calls for proactive engagement. He emphasizes that the era of waiting for ‘tomorrow’s leadership’ is over—the time is now. Young Nigerians must equip themselves with knowledge, take bold steps in politics, business, and other spheres, and work toward a better country.

The Youth’s Moment to Lead

While A Journey in Service may not be an instinctive choice for many young Nigerians, its messages are particularly relevant in today’s democratic era. The epilogue, Letter to the Next Generation, serves as a call to action—urging Nigerian youths to take charge, unite, and build a better future. Reading this book, particularly its epilogue, can inspire young people to embrace patriotism, participate in governance, and actively shape the nation’s future.
