Thousands of supporters defied a government ban on rallies and gatherings to welcome Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan during her homecoming and Sallah celebration in Kogi Central on April 1, 2025.

Despite a curfew imposed by the Chairman of Okehi Local Government Area, Amoka Tuesday, citing security concerns, enthusiastic supporters flooded the streets, waving banners and chanting solidarity songs in support of the senator. The restriction, which limited movement and public gatherings, was announced ahead of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s visit, warning that violators would face arrest and prosecution.

The overwhelming turnout underscored the senator’s popularity in Kogi Central, particularly in the wake of recent political controversies. Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, has been at the center of political storms, including a proposed recall effort initiated by some political actors and her recent suspension from the Senate.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as a political statement by the people of Kogi Central, who braved the restrictions to welcome their representative. “This is not just a homecoming event; it is a demonstration of the people’s unwavering support for Natasha,” said Musa Ibrahim, a resident of Okene. “The government can impose restrictions, but they cannot silence the will of the people.”

In her address to supporters, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan expressed gratitude for the massive turnout and reaffirmed her commitment to the development of Kogi Central. “Your love and support fuel my resolve to continue working for the good of our people. No intimidation can deter me from standing with my constituents,” she said.

The Kogi State Government has yet to officially respond to the large gathering, but security operatives were observed monitoring the situation to prevent any potential unrest. Political analysts say the event highlights the growing divide between the state government and grassroots supporters of Akpoti-Uduaghan.

As political tensions continue to build in Kogi Central, many are watching closely to see how the state government and security agencies handle the situation in the coming days.
