‘No POP Houses in Ibadan’: Portable’s Comments Ignite Outrage Among Oyo Residents

The statement by Nigerian artist Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, claiming that there are no well-furnished apartments or POP houses in Ibadan or Oyo State has sparked outrage among the state’s indigenous people. Portable, known for his controversial remarks, criticized the housing infrastructure in the state during a recent public statement.

Many residents have taken to social media to refute his claims, showcasing images of well-designed houses and modern apartments in Ibadan and other parts of the state.

Muritala Adekunle, an Ibadan-based entrepreneur, described Portable’s remarks as baseless and uninformed. “It’s laughable that someone like Portable, who may not have toured Ibadan extensively, would make such a false claim. Ibadan is home to many luxurious homes and modern estates,” she said.

Rolake Adeshina, a real estate developer, also criticized the artist’s comment. “I have personally been involved in constructing several POP-designed houses in Ibadan. Portable should visit areas like Bodija, Jericho, or Akobo before making such sweeping statements,” she argued.

Another resident, Ayomide Alao, a teacher, expressed disappointment in Portable’s lack of respect for the state’s progress. “These comments are not only disrespectful but show ignorance. Oyo State has developed greatly over the years, and Ibadan is no longer the city he may think it is,” she said.

Among the men who reacted, Taiwo Alabi, a civil servant, was quick to counter Portable’s statement. “Does Portable even know Ibadan? Has he been to areas like Agodi or Kolapo Ishola Estate? His statement is insulting to those of us who are proud of the state’s growth,” he stated angrily.

Similarly, Afolabi Emmanuel, a student, said Portable’s comment shows a lack of awareness. “Portable needs to move beyond his narrow perspective. Ibadan has more than enough modern homes to rival other states,” he said.

This isn’t the first time Portable has faced backlash for his controversial statements, as his comments often spark debates online. However, many Oyo residents believe this time he went too far, attacking the pride and progress of the state.
