Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

LAGOS — Lagos State Governor, , on Thursday marked his 61st birthday with a message of gratitude and reflection, celebrating a life dedicated to public service and reaffirming his commitment to the continued development of Nigeria’s commercial capital.

In a heartfelt message shared on his social media platforms, the governor expressed appreciation to Lagosians for their support and trust throughout his years in office, describing the opportunity to lead Africa’s most populous city as one of the greatest privileges of his life.

“Today, as I celebrate my 61st birthday, my heart is incredibly full,” Sanwo-Olu wrote. “For eight of these celebrations, I have had the rare privilege of serving as your Governor. It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve this extraordinary state and its people.”

The governor, who assumed office in May 2019, noted that governing Lagos had been both demanding and rewarding, saying the experience had taught him valuable lessons about resilience, patience, and leadership.

“Leading a state as dynamic and energetic as Lagos is no small task. It has taught me more about resilience and patience than any other chapter in my life,” he stated.

Sanwo-Olu’s birthday comes at a time when Lagos continues to witness rapid urban expansion, increasing infrastructural development, and significant investments in transportation, housing, healthcare, education, and technology-driven governance.

Over the years, his administration has pursued the THEMES and subsequently THEMES+ development agenda, focusing on transportation and traffic management, health and environment, education and technology, making Lagos a 21st-century economy, entertainment and tourism, as well as governance and security.

Among the flagship projects associated with his administration are the completion and operation of the Lagos Blue Rail Line, expansion of road infrastructure across the state, the development of new housing schemes, and ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and public transportation.

Reflecting on his journey in public office, the governor expressed profound gratitude for life, family, good health, and the confidence reposed in him by residents of the state.

“I am filled with gratitude today — gratitude for life, for family, for health and for the enduring trust of Lagosians,” he wrote.

According to him, despite the challenges associated with public service, the opportunity to contribute to the growth and transformation of Lagos remains deeply fulfilling.

“Public service has its challenging days, but the privilege of building a greater Lagos makes every single moment worth it,” he added.

The Merit Newspaper reports that political leaders, government officials, associates, and residents of Lagos joined in celebrating the governor’s birthday, with many commending his contributions to governance and infrastructural development in the state.

Sanwo-Olu also used the occasion to reassure residents that his administration remains focused on delivering more dividends of democracy and improving the quality of life of Lagosians.

“We have come a long way together, yet the work never stops. As I celebrate today, my commitment to you remains as strong as ever. There is still more to do, more to build and more progress to achieve for everyone who calls this great state home,” the governor said.

He concluded by thanking Lagosians for their partnership and support throughout his tenure, emphasizing that the progress recorded by the state has been a collective achievement.

“Thank you, Lagosians, for walking this path with me.”

As Governor Sanwo-Olu turns 61, his message serves not only as a personal reflection but also as a reminder of the continuing task of governing one of Africa’s most influential economic and cultural hubs. With less than two years remaining in his second term, attention will increasingly focus on the legacy projects and reforms that will define his administration in the years ahead.
