The Southwest Governors

By Ibrahim Kegbegbe

In an unusual and striking development, all six governors of Nigeria’s Southwest states were seen walking together yesterday without any visible security detail. The rare sight, which has sparked discussions across political and social circles, raises questions about its significance—was it a mere symbolic act, a well-coordinated political statement, or an indication of renewed confidence in the region’s security?

Eyewitnesses who saw the governors strolling through a public space during the last governors’ forum expressed both admiration and curiosity. Given Nigeria’s security challenges, it is uncommon to see high-profile political figures, especially governors, move about without their customary heavy security escorts. In a country where political leaders are often shielded by convoys of armed personnel, this act appeared deliberate and well-calculated.

A Message of Security and Confidence?

Some analysts interpret the governors’ action as an effort to project a sense of security and stability in the Southwest region. The zone, which comprises Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti states, has witnessed pockets of security challenges, including banditry and clashes between farmers and herders. By walking unguarded, the governors may have intended to reassure citizens that the region is safe.

Political commentator and security analyst Mr. Tunde Allen believes the action was meant to inspire public confidence. “Governors walking freely without security sends a message that they trust the security apparatus they have put in place. It suggests that the region is stable enough for even its leaders to move around unprotected.”

A Coordinated Political Strategy?

On the other hand, skeptics argue that the act was a carefully choreographed political move rather than a spontaneous show of security. With the 2027 general elections gradually approaching, some observers believe the governors could be working to create a perception of unity and leadership in the region. Southwest Nigeria has historically played a strategic role in national politics, and such a display could be an attempt to demonstrate solidarity and collective governance.

Renowned political analyst Mr. Olamiji Jigan shared his perspective: “It is important to ask whether this was simply an unscripted moment or part of a broader political narrative. If it was the latter, it could be a move to strengthen regional cooperation ahead of future elections.”

Security Implications and Public Reactions

The absence of security officers around the governors has also sparked discussions about the practicality of this approach in Nigeria’s current security climate. While some citizens lauded the move as a sign of true leadership, others questioned the wisdom behind it. “If this is meant to show that Nigeria is safe, let them try it consistently in different locations,” a social media user remarked.

Security expert Mr. Jamiu Muili expressed caution. “While the act may be commendable, it is important to ensure that security concerns are not trivialized. Public officials, especially governors, remain prime targets for criminal elements, and the complete absence of security could expose them to unnecessary risks.”

Whether a bold political statement or a symbolic reassurance of security in the region, the sight of all Southwest governors walking freely without security has certainly captured public attention. As discussions continue, citizens and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if this becomes a recurring practice or remains a one-time gesture.
