Peter Obi is seen carrying a tray of plates of rice, reportedly serving guests at a party

A viral photograph of Mr. Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate and former governor of Anambra State, has stirred both admiration and criticism. In the picture, Obi is seen carrying a tray of plates of rice, reportedly serving guests at a party.

While humility is a virtue often praised in leadership, this particular act raises deeper questions about the growing culture of performative politics in Nigeria. Should a man who once occupied a high political office reduce himself to such theatrics in the name of connecting with the people? Is this genuine humility, or a calculated attempt to stir emotional sympathy ahead of the 2027 elections?

Many Nigerians, particularly those disillusioned by years of unfulfilled promises, may find this gesture endearing. But we at The Merit Newspaper believe such acts risk trivializing the dignity of public office and the seriousness of national leadership. The presidency is not a stage for drama but a platform for vision, competence, and credibility.

We ask our readers: Do you believe Peter Obi’s gesture was a sincere display of service or a strategic bid for future votes?
We welcome your thoughts. Let the debate begin.
