President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, and Special Adviser on Political Matters, Ibrahim Masari, to supervise the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Assembly primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The directive assigns the duo presidential oversight of the party’s primary elections for Senate and House of Representatives seats, as preparations gradually intensify within the ruling party.

The Merit Newspaper reports that the move follows a series of high-level consultations involving lawmakers, including senators and members of the House of Representatives, who have pushed for strict adherence to internal party democracy in the selection process.

Under the arrangement, Gbajabiamila and Masari will coordinate with APC state governors, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), as well as the leadership of the National Assembly in executing their assignment.

They are expected to work closely with key stakeholders to promote peaceful, transparent and credible primaries nationwide, while providing regular updates to the President on developments.

Despite the new supervisory structure, the APC National Secretariat will retain its constitutional responsibility for organising and conducting the primaries in line with the Electoral Act and party guidelines.

The supervisory team will focus on coordination, monitoring compliance and managing disputes, even as pressure mounts from some party leaders seeking an expansion of the structure—an idea the President has so far declined to consider.
