What began as a celebratory welcome for popular social media activist VeryDarkMan upon his return from China on Wednesday night quickly escalated into a massive protest in Abuja, as a large crowd of supporters turned the airport reception into a street demonstration chanting anti-government slogans.

According to eyewitness accounts and viral videos circulating on social media, the activist was warmly received by a group of supporters at the airport, where excitement filled the atmosphere over his return from the Asian country. However, the mood changed almost immediately as he engaged with his followers and voiced strong concerns about the worsening security situation in Nigeria.

Moments after the airport reception, VeryDarkMan and his supporters reportedly moved in a procession through parts of Abuja, where the gathering transformed into a full-blown protest. The crowd chanted “APC must go” and “Tinubu must go,” expressing anger over rising insecurity and economic hardship across the country.

In a widely shared video from the scene, the activist was seen confronting security concerns with visible frustration, lamenting persistent cases of kidnappings and violent attacks affecting communities. He questioned the effectiveness of security personnel deployed in affected areas, saying:

“They are kidnapping our children, beheaded a teacher, our children are still in the bush, and you’re here holding a gun. Are you not ashamed of yourself?”
The protest, which appeared spontaneous, drew hundreds of participants as chants intensified and movement spread through parts of the Federal Capital Territory. The demonstration, originating from what was initially a welcome rally, has since sparked widespread discussion online.

The Merit Newspaper reports that the viral footage has generated mixed reactions across social media platforms. While supporters described the action as a reflection of public frustration over insecurity and governance challenges, critics argued that the protest could inflame tensions and politicise sensitive national issues.

Observers note that the incident highlights the growing influence of social media personalities in mobilising citizens and shaping public discourse, especially at a time of heightened economic pressure, unemployment, and security concerns.

Political analysts further argue that such public expressions of dissatisfaction reflect deepening frustration among Nigerians ahead of future elections, while also underscoring the urgent need for government intervention to address insecurity and economic hardship.

However, supporters of the administration maintain that the government inherited longstanding structural challenges and is actively working to stabilise the economy and improve national security.

As reactions continue to trail the Abuja protest, the incident has once again placed Nigeria’s security situation, citizens’ right to protest, and the role of digital influencers in national activism at the centre of public debate.
