LAGOS – In a dramatic turn of events, Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, was impeached on Monday, January 13, 2025, by 32 out of 40 members of the Assembly. His removal follows allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and financial mismanagement.

According to sources within the Assembly, Obasa was accused of misappropriating public funds, including the alleged expenditure of ₦17 billion on a single gate for the Assembly complex, a claim that sparked widespread outrage and condemnation. Other allegations include mishandling constituency funds and failing to properly execute constituency projects.

The impeachment proceedings were swift, with lawmakers citing their commitment to upholding transparency and accountability in governance. Speaking after the decision, a senior lawmaker stated, “This impeachment is in the best interest of Lagosians. We must hold our leaders accountable and ensure prudent use of public resources.”

Following the impeachment, Obasa’s deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1, was immediately sworn in as the new Speaker. Meranda, in her acceptance speech, pledged to restore public trust in the Assembly and ensure better oversight of public funds.

Obasa, who had served as Speaker since 2015, faced growing criticism in recent months over alleged financial irregularities and his leadership style. His removal marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Lagos State, with analysts predicting further repercussions for governance in the state.

As investigations into the allegations against Obasa continue, Lagosians eagerly await further developments in the case.
