Lagos, Nigeria —
Nigeria is projected to become one of the world’s largest economies by the year 2075, ranking fifth globally with an estimated Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of about $13.1 trillion, according to long-term economic projections by Goldman Sachs.

The Merit Newspaper reports that the forecast places Africa’s most populous nation behind only China, India, the United States and Indonesia, but ahead of major global powers such as Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, France and Brazil — a development that, if realised, would represent a historic transformation of Nigeria’s economic standing.

Goldman Sachs’ projection is part of a broader outlook on how global economic power will shift over the next five decades, driven largely by population growth, urbanisation, rising productivity and expanding middle classes across emerging markets, particularly in Africa and Asia.

Under the projection, China is expected to remain the world’s largest economy by 2075 with about $57 trillion, followed closely by India at $52.5 trillion and the United States at $51.5 trillion. Indonesia is forecast to reach $13.7 trillion, slightly ahead of Nigeria, while Pakistan and Egypt are also expected to cross the $10 trillion mark.

For Nigeria, the projection reflects its massive population — expected to become the third-largest in the world — as well as its potential for industrialisation, digital expansion, energy production and consumer-driven growth. Goldman Sachs’ long-term model assumes that countries like Nigeria will gradually narrow the income and productivity gap with advanced economies, allowing faster growth over time.

However, analysts warn that such an outcome is not automatic. Infrastructure development, education, political stability, investment in technology, and effective economic governance will play a decisive role in whether Nigeria can turn demographic strength into real prosperity.

Still, the Goldman Sachs outlook places Nigeria at the centre of the world’s future economic map — a signal that Africa’s largest economy could become one of the defining global growth stories of the 21st century.
