Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje

Abuja, Nigeria – June 27, 2025

Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has officially resigned as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), bringing an end to his controversial tenure at the helm of Nigeria’s ruling party.

Ganduje’s resignation was tendered on Friday during a closed-door meeting at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja. Sources within the party revealed that the former Kano State governor stepped down citing health concerns and the need to allow the party to realign its leadership structure in line with its zoning arrangement.

The development comes amid sustained internal pressure from party stakeholders who had long called for the chairmanship position to return to the North-Central geopolitical zone, in accordance with the APC’s internal power-sharing agreement.

Although there has been no official statement from Ganduje as of press time, top party officials have confirmed his exit and say preparations are underway to appoint an acting chairman.

The Merit Newspaper reports that Ganduje assumed office as APC National Chairman in August 2023, following the resignation of Senator Abdullahi Adamu. His tenure was marked by internal party challenges, legal controversies, and efforts to stabilize the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Political analysts believe Ganduje’s resignation may pave the way for reconciliation within the APC and a potential restructuring of its National Working Committee.

More updates are expected as the party finalizes arrangements for a leadership transition.
