Controversy Trails Appointment of New Alaafin as Traditionalists, MURIC Fault Makinde’s Decision

The appointment of Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo by Governor Seyi Makinde has sparked controversy, with key traditional leaders and Islamic advocacy groups questioning the legitimacy of the selection process.

Reports gathered by The Merit Newspaper indicate that elder traditionalists (Babalawo), in the presence of the Oyomesi—the council of kingmakers—had initially chosen Prince Rasaq Adegoke as the rightful successor to the revered Alaafin stool. However, Governor Makinde’s decision to recognize Prince Owoade instead has fueled accusations of political and religious bias.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), a prominent Islamic rights group, has been vocal in its opposition. In a statement released by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC accused the governor of deliberately sidelining a Muslim candidate in favor of a non-Muslim, claiming that the decision reflects a deep-seated prejudice against Islam. The group insisted that the traditional selection process must be upheld and called on Governor Makinde to respect the will of the Oyomesi.

Further intensifying the dispute, five of the kingmakers have also rejected the appointment, alleging government interference in what should have been a strictly traditional process. The dissenting kingmakers have maintained that their choice was disregarded in favor of political considerations, and they have vowed to challenge the decision through legal means.

Governor Makinde, in response, has defended his decision, stating that due process was followed. During the official presentation of the staff of office to Oba Owoade, the governor reportedly threatened legal action against the opposing kingmakers but later suggested he might reconsider if they sought forgiveness from the newly installed monarch.

As tensions rise, observers within and outside Oyo State are closely monitoring developments, with many calling for a resolution that upholds both traditional values and legal procedures. The controversy underscores the delicate balance between political authority and cultural heritage in the selection of Yoruba traditional rulers.

The Merit Newspaper will continue to provide updates as the situation unfolds.
